Power of One Stories

Spotlight on Science: Dr Monique Udell

At Power of One, we often celebrate the rescuers on the ground, but behind the scenes, science plays a vital role in shaping how we care for dogs in shelters and rescues around the world.

One researcher whose work has had a remarkable impact is Dr Monique Udell, an expert in dog and wolf behaviour at Oregon State University. Her research explores one powerful question  how do dogs understand us, and how can we better understand them?

Wolves and Dogs

Dr Udell’s research revealed that wolves, when raised with humans, can be just as responsive to human gestures as dogs. The difference is not simply about genetics, but about environment and experience.

For rescues, this finding is profound. It means that even a dog with a difficult or traumatic start in life can learn to trust, bond, and connect again when shown consistent care and compassion.

The Power of the Look Back

In one of her well-known studies, dogs were given a puzzle to solve. When they could not complete it, they looked back to their human for help, while wolves kept working independently.

This behaviour is more than instinct, it shows how deeply dogs have evolved to communicate and cooperate with humans. For rescuers, that simple act of “looking back” can mark the beginning of rebuilding trust between a once-neglected dog and a compassionate caregiver.

The Science of Friendliness

In 2017, Dr Udell co-authored a groundbreaking study linking dogs’ extraordinary sociability to specific genetic variations, the same region associated with Williams-Beuren syndrome in humans.

This discovery highlights that a dog’s capacity for connection, empathy, and love is woven into their biology. It explains why even dogs who have endured neglect or cruelty still seek companionship and respond so powerfully to kindness.

Science Meets Compassion

For shelters and rescues, Dr Udell’s work reinforces a vital truth. With patience, understanding, and the right environment, even the most fearful or withdrawn dog can rediscover trust and begin to heal.

Her research gives scientific validation to what every rescuer already knows in their heart that love, consistency, and compassion truly change lives.
