Ruth Tanner – Connecting Animal Welfare, Climate Justice and Human Rights

There are people working every day to build something bigger than themselves. People who understand that protecting animals, protecting the planet, and protecting communities are not separate missions, but deeply connected parts of the same story.

Ruth Tanner is one of those people.

Ruth is the UK Country Director at World Animal Protection UK. Her background spans international development, human rights advocacy, and NGO leadership. Today, her work focuses on strengthening animal welfare on a global scale while firmly linking it to climate justice, public health, and the wellbeing of communities worldwide.

Leadership That Addresses Root Causes

Under Ruth’s leadership, World Animal Protection UK continues to challenge the systems that cause animal suffering at scale. This work goes far beyond responding to harm. It focuses on prevention, accountability, and long-term structural change.

Key areas of impact include challenging industrial farming practices and wildlife exploitation, pushing for meaningful policy reform within government and industry, and clearly linking animal welfare to public health, climate resilience, and human rights. Central to this approach is mobilising everyday people, recognising that collective pressure is often what turns concern into lasting reform.

This is advocacy that looks upstream. Not only asking how suffering happens, but why it is allowed to continue.

Bridging Causes That Are Often Treated Separately

What stands out about Ruth’s approach is her ability to bridge worlds that are too often addressed in isolation. Animal welfare. Climate action. Human rights. She treats them not as competing priorities, but as shared responsibilities.

Her work reflects a deep understanding that progress rarely comes from one sector acting alone. Real change happens when people, movements, and institutions push steadily in the same direction. By framing animal protection as an essential part of global justice, Ruth helps create space for solutions that benefit animals, people, and the planet together.

Creating Conditions for Lasting Change

People like Ruth help build the conditions where compassionate action becomes possible. Their influence reshapes policy. Their advocacy supports communities. And their commitment reduces suffering long before emergencies appear.

At Power of One, we believe it is important to highlight individuals whose work strengthens every part of the global welfare movement. Ruth Tanner’s impact reaches far beyond headlines or individual campaigns. It lives in the quieter, slower work of systemic change. The kind that lasts.

If you care about the future of animals, the planet, and the people who share it, voices like hers matter.
