Meet Bilkes: The Unstoppable Heroine Behind Habiba and Friends Animal Shelter

In a world where animal welfare is often overlooked, Bilkes stands as a shining example of relentless dedication. She’s the incredible woman behind Habiba and Friends Animal Shelter in Egypt, and her story is nothing short of extraordinary.
The Tale of Bilkes and Her Lifesaving Mission
Founded in 2014, Habiba and Friends is home to 250 dogs, 250 cats, and even 4 monkeys.
But why the name?
It all started with a brave Baladi dog named Habibias. Bilkes rescued her from the streets, despite doctors deeming her “not worth saving.” Bilkes’s determination led to surgery, and Habibias lived a happy life in the USA.
The shelter was originally for cats, but witnessing the suffering of all animals made Bilkes expand her mission.
A Heroine’s Journey of Sacrifice and Resilience
With a team of 8 devoted workers, Bilkes battles adversity at every turn. Her own family initially opposed her animal-saving mission, and her engagement came to a crossroads – love or animals?
Bilkes chose the animals and faced the painful consequences, including being driven out of her own home, physical attacks, and alienation. But nothing could deter her.
A Crusader in a Land of Limited Protections
In a country with few animal protection regulations, Bilkes is a crusader. When she tries to seek help from authorities, they turn a blind eye. She constantly faces danger and her mental health bears the weight of the suffering she witnesses daily.
The Voice for the Voiceless
Bilkes is the voice for those who can’t speak for themselves. Her strength is the driving force behind her dream: to build a shelter big enough to keep these animals safe.
This job may strip her of her smiles, but it fills her heart with purpose. She endures relentless aggression from those who fail to understand her mission. Bilkes is a beacon of hope in the darkness, and her story inspires us all.
Let’s change the narrative and ensure that women like her receive the acknowledgment, respect, and resources they need to continue their life-saving work.
Bilkes is a true heroine, and her commitment deserves our support.
Together, we can make a difference.
