La Gorda’s Unexpected Journey Home
A Missing Dog Spotted During World Cup Celebrations
After being missing for almost a month, a six-year-old dog from Mexico has been reunited with her family in the most unexpected way.
La Gorda disappeared from her home in Ciudad Victoria in May. Her owner searched for her but, as the weeks passed without any sign, the chances of finding her seemed increasingly uncertain.
Then, during celebrations following Mexico’s World Cup victory, La Gorda appeared in the background of a livestream.
Her owner’s brother recognised her in the footage, allowing the family to locate her and bring her home safely.
The Importance of Being Seen
On the surface, it is an extraordinary and uplifting story. A missing dog appearing unexpectedly in the middle of a football celebration sounds almost impossible.
However, it also demonstrates why visibility is so important when an animal goes missing.
Photographs, videos and social media posts can travel far beyond the immediate area where an animal was last seen. They can reach friends, relatives, local communities and complete strangers who may recognise a familiar face.
In La Gorda’s case, one person paying attention to the background of a video made the difference.
Small Actions Can Lead to Reunions
Missing animal appeals can sometimes feel repetitive, especially when days or weeks pass without an update. However, every share keeps an animal visible and increases the chance that the right person will see them.
A shared photograph could reach someone living nearby.
A comment may bring an old post back into people’s feeds.
A short video could capture an animal in the background without the person filming even realising it.
These small actions can become part of the chain that reunites an animal with its family.
Why Identification Matters
La Gorda’s story is also a reminder of the importance of making sure dogs can be identified.
Clear, recent photographs should be kept in case an animal goes missing. Microchip details and contact information should remain up to date, while local veterinary practices, shelters and community groups should be informed as quickly as possible.
Visibility helps people recognise a missing animal. Accurate identification helps bring them home.

Our Thoughts
At Power of One, we believe animal welfare often begins with awareness.
Not every person can search the streets, foster a missing animal or participate directly in a rescue. However, almost anyone can share an appeal, report a sighting or take a moment to look more closely.
La Gorda made her return during one of the busiest and most public moments imaginable. Her family’s search ended because somebody recognised her and spoke up.
Welcome home, La Gorda. You certainly chose a memorable moment to be seen.
