How Real Change Takes Root

How Real Change Takes Root

Every big change has to start somewhere.

Not with headlines.
Not with fanfare.
But often with something small. Quiet. Almost ordinary.

For Rachael Wright, it started on a beach in Sri Lanka with a single dog, thin, weak, and starving. The animal couldn’t eat. A stick was lodged deep in its mouth, and it was slowly fading away.

Armed with nothing more than a basic first aid kit and a deep instinct to help, Rachael carefully removed the obstruction. The dog was finally able to eat again. And in that simple act, something far greater began to unfold.

A Ripple Begins

A few days later, the dog came back with a friend in need.
Then another.
Then another.

Each time, Rachael provided what she could, basic care, attention, and compassion. And each time, the animals left better than they arrived. What started as a chance encounter quickly became a calling. The idea began to grow: what if there were a place these animals could go? What if help wasn’t the exception, but the norm?

That was the seed.

The Birth of TOLFA

In 2004, Rachael found herself in Ajmer, India. And that’s where it happened.

A photograph changed everything.

Four street dogs tied to a post in the sweltering desert heat—no food, no water, and no hope. The image was brutal and unforgettable. It burned itself into Rachael’s mind. In that moment, she knew: this is where her Tree of Life would take root.

By World Animal Day in 2005, her vision became reality.
And so, TOLFA was born.

From One Life to Hundreds

Today, thanks to years of dedication and the support of many, TOLFA provides care for up to 600 animals at any one time.

They rescue, rehabilitate, and offer shelter to animals who have been injured, abused, abandoned, or simply forgotten. They run vaccination and sterilisation programmes to improve the welfare of entire communities. They offer veterinary services for owned animals whose guardians can’t afford private care. And they deliver education to local children, helping to build a future where animals are seen not as burdens, but as beings deserving of empathy and protection.

It’s not just a hospital. It’s a sanctuary.
A place where lives are saved, and dignity is restored.

One Act. Endless Impact.

When you trace it all back—to the very beginning—it didn’t start with a grand campaign or massive funding.

It started with one dog.
One person.
One decision to stop and care.

That’s how real change begins: with a seed.

When that seed is nurtured, when it’s fed with kindness, watered with persistence, and supported by others it grows. And sometimes, it grows into something powerful enough to heal hundreds of lives.
