Fido of Borgo San Lorenzo – Loyalty That Endured a Lifetime
In a small Italian town called Borgo San Lorenzo, there lived a dog named Fido.
During the Second World War, Fido’s guardian was killed in a bombing raid while travelling to work. Fido did not understand the news. He did not understand death. What he understood was love, routine, and connection.
And so, every single day, Fido walked to the bus stop and waited.
He waited in the evenings. He waited through cold and heat. He waited as seasons changed and years passed. For fourteen years, until his final breath, Fido returned to the same place, expecting the person he loved to come home.

Not Loss, but Devotion
The people of the town watched Fido’s vigil unfold. They tried to comfort him. They tried to take him home. They tried to help him move on.
But Fido was not lost. He was not confused. He was devoted.
Stories like this are often described as rare or almost mythical. But they are not anomalies. This behaviour is deeply ingrained in dogs. Loyalty, attachment, and emotional memory are part of who they are.
Dogs do not form bonds based on convenience or reward. Their relationships are not transactional. They remain present, even when it hurts.
What Animals Teach Us About Love
There is something quietly confronting about that level of devotion.
In a world where we move on quickly, replace easily, and forget often, animals show us a different way to exist. One rooted in consistency. In commitment. In emotional truth.
Fido’s story reminds us that love does not disappear simply because circumstances change. That animals feel deeply. Grieve deeply. And remember deeply.
These are not abstract ideas for those working in rescue. They are lived realities, witnessed every day in shelters and clinics, in dogs who wait, trust, and hope despite everything they have lost.
What We Owe in Return
Perhaps the greatest lesson Fido leaves behind is this.
If animals are capable of this kind of loyalty without words, without promises, and without conditions, then we owe them protection, kindness, and respect in return.
At Power of One, we share stories like Fido’s not because they are sentimental, but because they reveal something essential. Behind every rescued animal is a heart capable of extraordinary connection.
And that is why their lives matter.
