Power of One Stories
Changemakers in Animal Welfare - Claire Bass
Every so often, someone’s work reminds us what long term progress in animal welfare truly looks like. It is not only the rescue work happening on the ground. It is also the work that becomes part of law and shapes the future for millions of animals.
Claire Bass and Her Impact
Claire Bass has spent more than two decades driving that level of change. As Senior Director of Campaigns and Public Affairs at Humane Society International UK, she has been involved in many of the most significant animal welfare developments of recent years.
Her work has contributed to the UK’s Animal Welfare Sentience Act, supported the movement to ban glue traps, pushed forward major campaigns such as Fur Free Britain and advanced efforts to improve farm animal welfare through initiatives like The Crate Escape. Beyond the UK, she has also played a part in international progress, including work connected to ending the dog meat trade in South Korea.

How Real Change Happens
What stands out is not only the outcomes but the way she works. Her approach is evidence based, strategic, collaborative and built on the belief that real progress comes from shifting both policy and public understanding.
Why This Matters
For us at Power of One, people like Claire Bass show what is possible when determination is matched with long term strategy. They remind us that animal welfare is not limited to what happens in shelters today. It is also shaped by the policies, laws and systems that prevent suffering before it happens.
Recognising Every Part of the Work
We celebrate the frontline teams. We also celebrate the people working behind the scenes to change the structures that affect animals for generations to come.
