In Iraq, WarPaws is a sanctuary for over 700 dogs, each with their own incredible story. Despite facing numerous challenges, these dogs find refuge and rebuild their trust in humanity.
Founded by the incredible Louise Hastie, WarPaws is more than just a shelter—it’s a sanctuary. Louise’s journey began with rescuing a kitten named Simba in Iraq, sparking a mission that led her to build this safe haven. Together with a passionate team, Louise’s dedication continues to sustain and expand WarPaws.
WarPaws‘ mission goes beyond providing shelter. They’ve extended their rescue efforts across borders, saving 99 Ukrainian dogs from dire situations in Romania. However, they still face significant challenges, including financial constraints and a decline in rehoming rates. The closure of a partner shelter recently left 35 dogs stranded in Romania, a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles.
Despite these hurdles, hope prevails. WarPaws needs our support now more than ever.
Our Campaign Aims to Transform Their World, One Brick at a Time
The target is to raise £25,000 to achieve the following goals:
- Build 23 kennels with runs to provide safe and comfortable living spaces.
- Construct 5 crucial airlocks to enhance security and well-being.
- Replace plastic tubs with 21 sturdy pools to ensure hydration and create a space for play in the scorching heat.

- Free Roaming: 95% of the dogs roam freely within carefully selected groups, promoting companionship and reducing stress.
- Nutritious Meals: Fresh meals are prepared daily, tailored to meet their nutritional needs, and supplemented by commercial food donations from the UK.
- Community Care: WarPaws provides medical care and feeds dogs within a 0.5-mile radius, ensuring no animal goes without.
- Creative Play Stations: Recycled materials are transformed into play stations, encouraging physical activity and mental stimulation.
- On-Site Clinic: An on-site clinic operates seven days a week, offering essential vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and medical treatment.
- Cooling Measures: Cooling measures such as paddling pools, shaded areas, and swamp coolers are vital during the scorching Iraqi summers.
