When Heat Becomes a Threat to Life

When Heat Becomes a Threat to Life

The Challenge in Iraq

In recent weeks, WarPaws has faced one of the toughest battles imaginable: keeping their dogs alive in a relentless heatwave. With temperatures soaring above 50°C, the risks are extreme. Despite constant care, the team fears that in the coming days, some dogs may not survive.

Why Extreme Heat is Deadly

Every dog at WarPaws has access to clean water, shade, and pools to cool down. But in this kind of heat, it is not enough. The water heats rapidly, the ground radiates intense heat, and the air itself becomes stifling.

Unlike humans, dogs cannot sweat. Their only cooling mechanisms are panting and a little heat release through their paws. In such conditions, these systems fail quickly. Heatstroke can occur within minutes, particularly for older dogs, those with health issues, or breeds with thicker coats.

A Simple but Critical Intervention

For the next week, WarPaws are buying large ice blocks every day. It is a small measure, but one that can help bring down body temperatures, reduce the risk of heatstroke, and offer some desperately needed relief. In conditions like these, something as simple as ice can be the difference between life and death.

Dedication Beyond Measure

In Iraq, this kind of heat is an unrelenting, lethal force. And yet, thanks to the commitment of the WarPaws team, every single dog continues to receive water, shade, and now daily ice.

This is what true dedication to animal welfare looks like. Not when it is easy. Not when it is comfortable. But when survival is on the line.

The Bigger Picture

Heatwaves like this are becoming more common across the world, and for animals without a voice, they are among the most dangerous challenges of all. WarPaws’ work is a reminder that animal welfare is not just about rescue. It is about persistence, ingenuity, and the will to protect life in the harshest conditions.
