Mandela Day Campaign - Winter Bucket Beds
Honoring Mandela’s Legacy: Providing Warmth for Village Dogs
In celebration of Mandela Day on July 18th, HAART – Helping All Animals in Rural Towns embraced Nelson Mandela’s enduring legacy of human rights by launching a heartfelt campaign: “Winter Bucket Beds” for village dogs.
Why Winter Bucket Beds?
During South Africa’s severe winter months, village dogs face a tough battle for survival. With night-time temperatures plummeting to around 0 degrees, these dogs often find inadequate shelter in corners of yards or rubbish piles. The Winter Bucket Beds campaign aimed to offer these vulnerable animals a warmer, safer alternative.
The Campaign
HAART’s campaign invited supporters to contribute to the creation of these essential bucket beds. For the cost of a glass of wine or a beer, donors could help provide a bucket bed, each personalized with their name as a mark of their kindness. For an additional R50 (£2 or $3), donors could add a blanket, enhancing the comfort and warmth of each bed.
The Achievement
Thanks to the incredible generosity of our supporters, HAART achieved its goal of 67 Bucket Beds! This means that 67 village dogs now have a cozy, warm place to sleep during the coldest nights. This campaign has made a tangible difference in their lives, providing much-needed comfort in harsh conditions.
Beyond the Basics
Rescue shelters often require resources beyond the essentials of food and veterinary care. Initiatives like the Winter Bucket Beds campaign demonstrate that small, creative fundraising efforts can have a profound impact.
We hope this campaign inspires other shelters to explore innovative ways to support their critical work.
