In Memory of Hope
A Legacy That Inspired a Movement
The Beginning of HAART
At the start of July, we received the sad news from Sam at HAART that Hope had passed away.
Hope was not just a rescue dog. She was the inspiration behind HAART itself. Her story is not only central to the organisation’s beginnings but also to the values it continues to uphold: compassion, resilience, and the belief that one life can make a difference.
A Life Transformed
Hope came into Sam Keegan’s (Founder of HAART) life in 2019. She had been abandoned, injured, and left to die. But in that moment of rescue, something extraordinary happened. Despite immense pain, she responded with trust. In return, Sam made a promise to fight for her, whatever it took.
Hope survived. She recovered. And with her recovery came a renewed purpose. The founding of HAART and a commitment to help others like her.
A Teacher, Carer, and Companion
Following her recovery, Hope played a vital role in HAART’s work. She nurtured other vulnerable animals as a foster mother, provided a sense of calm to traumatised rescue pups, and became an unexpected guide to young people who had experienced fear and instability.
Her involvement with the Black Mambas Anti-Poaching Unit was particularly impactful. Through her presence, children who had grown up fearing dogs were able to form new connections. They learned to understand, empathise, and build trust.
Hope bridged the gap between people and animals. She helped change perceptions and, in doing so, changed lives.
A Profound Impact
Hope’s passing was sudden and deeply felt across the HAART team. However, the legacy she leaves behind is powerful and lasting.
She helped shape the ethos of HAART. She reminded everyone who met her, whether in person or through her story, that recovery is possible and that even the most broken beginnings can lead to remarkable transformations.
The Power of One
Hope’s journey reflects what we believe in at Power of One. That one life can ignite change far beyond itself. Through her resilience and quiet strength, Hope embodied the idea that love, when met with action, has the power to transform.
Her memory continues in the work HAART does every day and in the many lives she helped heal, both human and animal.
Rest in peace, Hope.
