Animal Kindness in the UK 2025

Animal Kindness in the UK 2025

Recent research from the RSPCA and its partners reveals how people across the UK think and feel about animals in 2025.

There is real progress to celebrate. But there are also challenges we cannot ignore.

Here is what the latest findings tell us.

We Love Animals and More of Us Are Saying It

71 percent of adults now identify as animal lovers.

An inspiring 89 percent of children and young people say the same.

That is not just sentiment. It reflects growing empathy, awareness and a culture that increasingly recognises animals as sentient beings worthy of care and respect.

Wildlife Protection Is Now the Top Priority

For the first time, more people prioritise wildlife protection over other animal related concerns.

Compassion is expanding beyond pets and companion animals to include the protection of habitats, biodiversity and vulnerable species.

This shift matters. It signals a broader understanding that animal welfare includes the natural world we all depend on.

Animal Welfare Is Rising on the National Agenda

Animal welfare now ranks as the third most important public issue in the UK, up from fifth last year.

That is a significant jump.

More people want accountability. More people want stronger standards. More people want meaningful change.

But There Are Worrying Trends

42 percent of adults report witnessing animal cruelty in the last year, particularly online.

Many of those exposed are younger people.

While awareness can drive action, repeated exposure to harm can also normalise cruelty or leave people feeling powerless.

We Care Deeply, But Many Feel Unsure How to Help

Despite strong concern for animals, many people say they lack the confidence to step in when they encounter a sick, injured or trapped animal.

Compassion is there.
Clarity and confidence are not always.

This gap is where education, support and community matter most.

Turning Compassion Into Action

This research highlights enormous potential for positive change.

  • The UK cares.
  • Children care even more.
  • Wildlife protection is now a priority.
  • Animal welfare is climbing the national agenda.

But kindness must be matched with practical action, accessible information and collective responsibility.
