About
Power of One is a non-profit organisation which supports small teams led by women predominantly in emerging markets who work in the animal welfare community, including funding transport and infrastructure projects, providing emergency funding, investment in local education and spay and neuter programmes and creating a support network for women.
Animal welfare disproportionately impacts women and there are thousands of women all over the world who are fighting to improve the lives of animals, make their communities safer by reducing the spread of disease, reduce the number of animals on the street through rescue, rehabilitation, re-homing and spay and neuter campaigns, raising awareness through education in local schools and improving public perceptions of the cities, towns and countries they live in. This industry relies almost exclusively on public donations and many women risk their livelihoods and, in some cases, their lives, to be a part of it. Yet behind each of these women and their stories, lies a community that can thrive from capital investment – job creation, family support, local business support, access to education, positive public perception, mental health support and at the forefront of these industries is women. Kindness shouldn’t equate to powerlessness. Our mission is to bring that power back to these women. To recognise the importance of their work and their contribution to society and to help them build sustainable businesses in a way that benefits everyone.
Across all industries there is a focus on environmental, social and governance issues – creating equality for women and platforms for women to thrive and working to improve environmental standards. The animal welfare community and everything it stands for embodies everything we should be concerned with furthering as a society and it’s right in front of our eyes. All of the foundations are already laid, all we need to do is open our eyes – choose to see and choose to change.

Key Pillars
Enterprise
Provision of investment capital and business skills to build sustainable business models; connecting with local businesses for transport, infrastructure, veterinary treatment and animal feed; assistance with social media-outreach via campaigns; access to education for women.
Equality
By investing in sustainable business models and opening access to business skills, we create financial independence for women and their dependants and give them a voice in local communities; through our awareness campaigns we give them prominence and standing in their communities; many of the women we support are based in emerging markets where access to jobs, education and equality can be even more difficult for women.
Community
Our investment in this community creates local jobs, whether that be manual workers and local suppliers for shelter building, local veterinarians, transport suppliers and, by working with these women, local authorities can create positive public perceptions of their treatment of both the women business owners and their efforts to improve animal welfare standards in their local communities; encouraging a code of best practice for rescue teams to ensure the highest standards are met when animals are re-homed internationally.
Support
Not only financially through investment capital, but emotionally through a collaborative network of women who can rely on each other for emotional support; the animal welfare community has some of the highest cases of mental illness and suicide and connecting these women can prevent feelings of isolation and desperation; we focus on wellbeing for these women and the importance of mental health.
Our Ambassadors
Our ambassadors are crucial to our strategy by using their public profiles to raise awareness of our mission across wide and varied demographics and bringing female voices to traditionally male-dominated areas. Each of our ambassadors has personal connections with one or more of our central tenets which make them special partners, whether that be champions for mental health, education, animal advocates or women in traditionally male-dominated sports.
